Vintage wedding photograph of Harry Luke and Joyce Evelyn Fremlin (daughter of Henry James Leigh Fremlin and his wife, Maud Evelyn Deane). The wedding photograph was taken in 1918, at Larnaca, shortly after the wedding – ceremony “in the little Anglican Church of S.Helena” (C&M, II, 44). At the time, Luke was still commissioner of Famagusta (1918-1920).

Luke writes about his marriage in his Autobiography Cities and Men:
″Two marriages occured in my family during my time in Cyprus. Early in 1914 my sister Lily married Dr Leonard Boys, a specialist in rheumatoid arthritis practising at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire; in 1918 took place my own marriage (dissolved after World War II) to Joyce Fremlin, recently invalided from the Macedonian front, where she had been serving with the Serbian Relief Fund. She had come to Cyprus to stay with an aunt, Mrs. Francis Baxendale, wife of the Commissioner of Larnaca….”. (C&M II, 44)
