Full Speed Ahead. Tales from the Log of a Correspondent with Our Navy. [Inscribed Association copy from Henry B. Beston to Admiral William Sowden Sims – with original typescript in an envelope that is tipped into the pastedown / It is a typescript of a letter that was written during Beston’s time as editor at the magazine “The Living Age” (an offshoot of ‘Atlantic Monthly’) and stunningly also reflects on Beston’s classmate, Theodore Roosevelt, whom he obviously gave a copy of this book and according to Beston’s letter to Sims, Theodore Roosevelt and his children confirming that they enjoyed it. The letter reveals that Beston sends this book as a “thank you” to Admiral Sims for his time as war correspondent under Sims’ command during World War I. The typescript of the letter must be seen as an extension to Beston’s Preface in the book in which he writes: “And no acknowledgment, no matter how studied or courtly, its phrasing, can express what I owe to Admiral Sims for the friendliness of my reception, for his care that i be shown all the Navy’s activities, and for his constant and kindly effort to advance my work in every possible way”].

Beston to Admiral William Sowden Sims and also with a letter typescript to Admiral William Sowden Sims. The inscription reads: “To Admiral Sims with every grateful good wish of the author – Henry Beston Sheahan – 1919”.

The titlepage of the Botanologicon bears the manuscript ownership-entry of Nuremberg’s Astronomer, Philosopher and Mathematician Hieronymus Schreiber [also called Jerôme Schreiber], student-friend of Euricius Cordus’ son Valerius Cordus in Wittenberg and later trustee of Valerius Cordus’ scholarly estate after Valerius Cordus’ premature death in Rome. Dated in the same hand on the titlepage also the entry ‘Anno 1539’, when Valerius Cordus matriculated at Wittenberg and Schreiber already had studied there since May 1532. With several contemporary manuscript annotations throughout both titles (the Botanologicon and Examen) / II. A. M. Patrick Leigh Fermor’s personal copy with his name in ink on the endpaper of Volume II: “Patrick Leigh Fermor. London, July 1945.”. Leigh Fermor obviously rewarded himself with the purchase of Doughty’s masterpiece directly after World War Two. Stunning item, manifesting Doughty’s heavy influence on Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Travel writing. The set includes also three first editions in original dustjackets, of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s famous Travel writings: A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water [SIGNED], The Broken Road (with the second book, “Between the Woods and the Water” signed by Patrick Leigh Fermor.

Exlibris of E.H.Townsend [Edward Hume Townsend (1803 – 1880) and the manuscript-name in ink, of his daughter Henrietta Murray Townsend (died 1869) inside the cover of all four Volumes. Edward Townsend was educated in Clonakilty and later worked for the East India Company. Collection of two, personally signed and inscribed books from the library of Mohammad Hatta to Sam [Samuel] Koperberg and to former US-Ambassador Howard Palfrey Jones: I. The first book is inscribed in dutch by Hatta and the title is: Social-Economic Movements. By Harry W.Laidler. [Signed / Inscribed Association copy between Mohammad Hatta (Vice-President of Indonesia) and Samuel Koperberg (Secretary of the Java Institute and friend of Rabindranath Tagore)] / II. The second book is the compilation of Selected Writings by Mohammad Hatta: “Portrait of a Patriot”, inscribed and signed to Howard Palfrey Jones, who served as the United States Ambassador to Indonesia during the last years of the Sukarno presidency. Mohammad Hatta inscribed the book to Jones a mere 6 months before Jones’ death. An historical and comparative survey of socialism, communism, co-operation, utopianism, and other systems of reform and reconstruction.

Very good condition with some minor signs of wear only. From the library of swiss mathematician and astronomer Daniel Huber with at least two very minor manuscript annotations/corrections to the text. Subsequently this book was owned by the “Naturwissenschaftliche Museum in Basel”. Tournefort was notably the first to coin the term “Herbarium”.
