The recipient is possibly german astronomer R.Engelmann who wrote about Nebula. The letter dates from 1891 and is written in perfect german (Agnes Clerke was known to have written reviews and letters in French, German, Greek and Italian). Hardcover / Original publisher’s half-leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. One of the earliest and rarest publications with chromolithographic botanical illustrations. Excellent condition besides some mild, faded dampstains to some plates. Important: These bindings are usually broken, which is NOT the case here. While the book came from the library of Daniel Conner (Connerville / Manch House), the book belonged to Henrietta L. Conner [Inscribed by Sophia Perry Hornik to Henrietta L. Conner in 1890].

This is the original copy from the historical Castle-Freke Library in West Cork (Ireland), with two armorial bookplates to front and rear pastedown with the family’s motto ‘Pro Patria’. With two pages of manuscript annotations by a contemporary hand with a reference between the common name “Tarbet” in Scotland and a place-name in County Kerry in Ireland” (pages 13 of Volume II) / another entry is on page 12 of Volume II regarding the name-sake “Loch-Loung” for a Lake of ships in Scotland and Ireland.

Two original Wild-Flower Herbals with Wild-Flowers of which some have medicinal properties (Arnica). The original Plants in these two Herbals were collected by Garden Designer Verney Naylor in the Pyrenees in June-July, 1979 as well as an additional Wild-Flower Herbal, collected by Verney Naylor in the Rocky Mountains of Western Alberta and by her husband, Geologist David Naylor, in the North-West Territories and the Yukon in the year 1966 during a geological Excursion.
