2. [Private Materials Sir Harry Luke] – [Black Friday 1929 / Lukach, J.H.] Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand / Westinghouse Bremen Gesellschaft (Germany) .

Stock Certificate / Papers, correspondence and ephemera from the estate of J.H.Lukach: Interesting letters from Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Company (Sir Harry Luke has discovered that his father had shares in the Westinghouse Bremen Gesellschaft (Germany) and the several letters refer to the transfer of shares just shortly after Black Friday / Typescript of a letter by J.H.Lukach to Westinghouse, thanking him for ‘your kindness in giving me an option on 500 Shares of the Societe Anonyme Westinghouse’ / Old stocks as well as J.H.Lukach’s will including a letter from solicitor Laurence Alfred Baker (20, Copthall Avenue and Stock Exchange, London) to Harry Luke in which he urges Sir Harry Luke to destroy the certificate of the New Zealand Gold Company to prevent a query into its value cropping up again – Laurence Alfred Baker also indirectly refers to the recent crash at the stockmarket by mentioning: ‘It is most interesting, and no doubt significant, that in bad times such as these, when one might almost say that everything is falling, there is a definite and persistant demand for Consolidated Signal and Westinghouse Shares. / Also included is extensive documentation of J.H.Lukach’s estate etc. / Old IOU’s / One postcard to Harry Luke Esq. in Alt-Aussee (Austria) – from his father / One letter to Sir Harry in Kensington from a source undeciphered (1965) / Original, hungarian documentation (certificate) of the name J.H.Luke / Lease documentation of Ashley Gardens in the City of Westminster /

Manuscript letter signed (MLS) from Sir Lionel Earle to his colleague, Sir Harry Luke, condoling on the death of Luke’s father: “….He was a very old friend of mine & had the best heart of any friend that I can claim. I shall miss him much..”

Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) by english editor and biographer George Earle Buckle to Sir Harry Luke, condoling him on the death of his father, H.C.Luke. Buckle also mentions a referral Sir Harry obviously seeked to a Col. Murray an asked Buckle to broker the meeting. But Buckle reassures Luke that he met Col. Murray and Murray mentioned to him that Luke and himself went to Eton together: ’….i saw Murray later in the day + mentioned the matter + found him fully aware that he + you were together at Eton. So you can go to him without further introduction – 50 Albemarle Street – Yours with renewed sympathy G.E.Buckle.’

Manuscript letter Signed (MLS) by english architect and designer Charles Robert Ashbee to Sir Harry Luke, condoling him on the death of Luke’s father H.C.Luke. Ashbee reminisces: ‘I recall a charming hour I once spent with your father when on leave from Palestine – during your first year in Palestine [1921] – I brought him some message or other – the message is forgotten….the memory of the pleasant personality abides. Come to us again some day – Yours always, C.R.Ashbee – Godden Green – Near Sevenoaks).’

Collection of books and photographs together with a letter by Peter Luke to his father, Sir Harry Luke and an interesting letter by Alec McCowen [HadrianVII] to Sir Harry [talking about Baron Corvo etc.]. The collection includes: 1.Typed letter, signed by Peter Luke to his father, Sir Harry Luke, talking about the finalization of Sir Harry Luke’s amicable divorce from his wife ‘on the grounds of desertion’. / 2. Two books by Peter Luke, sent to Peter Luke’s daughter Georgiana (Giana) by irish poet and publisher Desmond Hogan, with a handwritten note. – The books are: I. A first edition of Peter Luke’s play “Hadrian VII” in perfect dustjacket and together with a related newspaper – clipping on the fantastic acting by Alec McCowen in ‘Hadrian VII’ – II. Peter Luke, Telling Tales – Selected Short Stories./ 4. Vintage photograph of Alec McCowen as Hadrian VII. , sent to Sir Harry Luke. inscribedby McCowen: ‘With feline good wishes, from Alec McCowen’/ 5. With a Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) by Alex McCowen: “Dear Sir Harry, Thank you for such an enjoyable luncheon, – and for your most informative and amusing stories of Rolfe [Baron Corvo], Duse [Eleonora], the Divine Sarah [Bernhardt] and many others. In the here included letter, in which Peter Luke writes to his father’s address on Barbados, Peter Luke also writes about his brother Micky, Michael Luke, (Peter Luke tells his father of his brother Micky’s visit to him in London: ’(he) has given up what he describes as steady employment in Paris for a somewhat doubtful opportunity of getting a part in a movie over here’).

One of the letters discussing the hardship of a reduced pension and the subsequent repercussions around him and for his wife and family / One letter in which he celebrates with his wife the arrival of a grandson [probably the son of writer Peter Luke, Harry Luke (brother of Georgiana)].

9. [Private Materials Sir Harry Luke] – [Luke, Sir Harry / Lukach, Harry] Luke, Peter.

Two emotional letters from writer Peter Luke to his father, Sir Harry Luke. One of the letters from ‘The Shelbourne’ in Dublin (10th of April 1949) to Sir Harry while he is possibly travelling in Brazil, in which Peter Luke makes fun of his father giving him the middle names ‘Ambrose Cyprian’ and also mentioning that ‘By the way, just in case you meet any business people in Brazil, C& Co. are interested in exporting Port, Sherry + Irish Whisky to that country – Bon voyage – your affectionate son Peter’ / One of the letters from Peter Luke’s address in London discusses the wish to relocate to the Oxford area and contemplating if the location is right for his commute to work and Sir Harry obviously wants to help. Peter Luke informs him that he thinks 5000 pounds would do the trick but he was not sure ‘what your limit is’.

10. [Private Materials Sir Harry Luke] – [Luke, Sir Harry / Lukach, Harry].

Five letters to Sir Harry Luke by his doctor from Aldeburgh, Suffolk, and also included some smaller notes from other doctors he consulted during the years. The letters are lengthy, often personal due to the friendly relationship to his doctor. The gourmet and food loving writer, Sir Harry, receives already in 1952 the order: ‘In the interim you must go carefully with food and drink’. Included is also some ephemera like a photograph of a procession to church in Aldeburgh and some original prescriptions.
