Here for the first time in one book, are selections from five Kate Greenaway favourites. Under the Window (1878), her first major success, is a collection of scenes from country life. Marigold Garden (1885) depicts the day-to-day life of children and their mothers and features verses written by Kate Greenaway herself.

A Apple Pie (1886), a Mother Goose alphabet rhyme about an enormous apple pie, appeals so strongly to the sweet tooth that it awakens the child in all of us. Kate Greenaway had an obvious affinity for these traditional poems; earlier she had illustrated a collection entitled Mother Goose (1881), which has long been a favourite of young children. Her Book of Games (1889) gives verbal and visual descriptions of children’s pastimes popular in Victorian England..As educational as it is delightful, this is the most ornate of the works of this collection.

Kate Greenaway’s art grew from her love of children and of the simple life…it is an art of eternal freshness, an art of childhood and springtime. (From jacket notes)

Catherine Greenaway (1846–1901) was an English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children’s book illustrations. In 1879 wood-block engraver and printer, Edmund Evans, printed Under the Window, an instant best-seller, which established her reputation. The depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in a Queen Anne style were extremely popular in England and internationally, sparking the Kate Greenaway style. Within a few years of the publication of Under the Window Greenaway’s work was imitated in England, Germany and the United States. (Wikipedia)
