“Good and Evil” presents two important essays by the man whom Reinhold Niebuhr has called “the greatest living Jewish philosopher.” These two interpretations differ from one another in method and purpose, but they are both concerned with good and evil, and are therefore brought together in one volume.
The first essay concerns the place of “Right and Wrong” in man’s observation of the human world and the apparent contradiction which holds sway in destiny. An answer is sought to the question of why evil is so powerful through an examination of several Psalms to determine how a growing insight into the relation between wrong-doing and true existence is expressed in those Psalms.
The second essay, “Images of Good and Evil,” deals with their places in the personal development of the individual man and with the factual conflict which holds sway in the soul. It seeks to answer the question of the origin of evil by examining several Old Israelitic and Persian myths which potray its twofold origin and by discovering what correspon twofoldness to the reality of present-day man.
To the philosopher, the theologian and the student, Professor Buber’s book will be of primary importance.
