This Catalogue lists the basic data on every oil painting in the National Gallery of Ireland and accompanying each description is an illustration of each painting. The Catalogue excludes the collection of watercolours and drawings, which, it is planned, will be published in a subsequent similar volume. The book therefore illustrates more than 2,200 paintings of which perhaps as many as one half have never before been illustrated. The listing includes and illustrates all acquisitions up to December 1980.
The introduction which relates to the history of the Gallery from its foundation in 1864 to the present day, draws extensively on unpublished material contained in the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Governors and Guardians. Comprehensive appendices represent the first attempt ever at listing the pictures according to subject matter and provenance. This major work of reference will be of inestimable value as a comprehensive descriptive listing of one of Europe’s finest public collections of paintings.
