This book is the story of Major M.V. Hay who was a Major in the 3rd Battalion of The Gordon Highlanders during the First World War. He was amongst the first batch of officers exchanged and his account is full of grim realism containing details of Mons and the Retreat. It is a well-written and informative narrative with a number of black and white photographs throughout the book.
