Very good- condition with only minor signs of external wear and tear. Some discoloring of pages but mostly to endpapers and pastedowns. Previous owner’s name “P.H.Stephenson” on endpaper in ink pen dated 1944.

The story of down and outs living together in turn of the 19th Century Russia portrayed in Gorky’s usual uncomprimising realism. The grinding poverty, violence and grimness of their lives laid bare and no Disney ending.
