Original engraving. Antwerp, Ortelius, [c.1595]. Plate Size: 51.2 cm x 35.8 cm. Sheet Size: 58 cm x 43.4 cm. Original map. In very good condition. Discreet tears near lower left and top right. Slight staining to top of sheet. Central vertical fold as issued. Professional repaired wormholes to above centre top border and near centre of map. A very minor hole along each lower vertical border of plate frame. Reverse carries Latin text. The map was orientated with Egypt’s north to the right.

Original engraving. Amsterdam Kircher, [c.1665]. Plate Size: 41.5 cm x 34 cm. Sheet Size: 47.6 cm x 39.2 cm. Original map. In very good condition. Some very light traces of foxing near outer margins. Some very minor ink staining evident near ‘Oceanus Orientasis’ text. Otherwise, a very clean and bright map.

Original hand-coloured engraving. Antwerp, Ortelius, 1590. Plate Size: 44 cm x 31 cm. Sheet Size: 53.7 cm x 38.5 cm. Original map. Very good, actually stunning, condition. Really clean and crisp. Generous margins. Reverse recto carries Latin text.

25. Palestine – Blaeu, Willem Janszoon. (1571 – 1638).

Original hand-coloured map. Augsburg, Guiljelmi Blaeuw, 1641. Plate Size: 50 cm x 38 cm. Sheet Size: 56.8 cm x 47.6 cm. Original map. Very good condition with some minor browning to outer margins only. Off square margins. Centre fold as issued. Map orientated so that the Mediterranean coastline faces the upper border. German text on reverse.

26. Congo – Tuckey, James Hingston. (1776 – 1816)

Vintage, 19th century manuscript map “Chart of the River Zaire from Capt. Tuckeys Narrative”.

Ink on Paper. Britain, c. 1850. 18.4 cm wide x 11.3 cm high. Mounted on paper (partially detached). Mounted on paper with an additional manuscript map of East Tartary. These maps were drawn in a 19th-century hand and used to be part of a Sammelband of Maps in the Public Library of South Shields.

27. Barrow, John.

Original contemporary red calf with gilt lettering and ornament to lacquer-polished-spine. The Volumes are numbered consecutively, even though these are two separate works. Excellent condition of the binding and interior of this important publication with very minor signs of foxing only ! All the maps in wonderful condition ! First french edition of “Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa” (Barrow’s journey with Lord Macartney in 1797 to the Cape of Good Hope) plus two further Volumes which describe the second journey in 1801 / 1802 to Saldanha Bay [Saldanhabaai] with an early image of Robben Island. The survey of the Dutch colonies was not only a seminal work on South Africa but the beautifully engraved, large folding map of South Africa was a turning point of african cartography and geographical illustration.
