Binding is professionally repaired with new endpaper. Stronger rubbed and discoloration on spine. Top and bottom of spine is slightly teared. Some minor stains and rubbed on cover. Slight wear on board edges. Spine and backing materials are separated. However, overall very good condition with firm binding and very clean interior.

Large margin between plate and sheet edges. Some spotting along sheet edges beyond map border. Central vertical fold as issued. Map is orientated to the north.

Fold-map of the route described in book at rear. Map of Cairo at rear also. Text in black and red. Hardcover [publisher’s original brown cloth]. Label on spine. Elaborately illustrated boards. Bookplate on front pastedown with inscription reading “The Old order changeth, yielding place to New.” Beautifully illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Spine with stronger abrasion but the binding overall firm and strong. Interior is bright and clean. Two images with issues: Ugly residue of paper of the preceding page on the tipped-in colour-plate depicting Queen Nefertari and the photograph of the Dunes of Cairo !

Excellent provenance: This is the former copy of the Bodleian library [now withdrawn as Duplicate]. Two further library stamps of Oxford University’s ‘Radcliff’s Library’ on half-title and title page.

Lower corner boards slightly bumped. Marking on front paste-down. Valleys between pastedowns and endpapers show tears. Binding a little shaky but overall still firm and strong. Interior is clean and bright. Extremely scarce publication !

Original engraving. Antwerp, Ortelius, [c.1595]. Plate Size: 51.2 cm x 35.8 cm. Sheet Size: 58 cm x 43.4 cm. Original map. In very good condition. Discreet tears near lower left and top right. Slight staining to top of sheet. Central vertical fold as issued. Professional repaired wormholes to above centre top border and near centre of map. A very minor hole along each lower vertical border of plate frame. Reverse carries Latin text. The map was orientated with Egypt’s north to the right.
