Collection of manuscript and printed materials regarding a genealogical research for the aristocratic Family ‘Zandrowitsch – Zander’. Sir Harry Luke who was related to the Zander family was assisted by a lady from Koenigsberg in Prussia. The lady in question,Genealogist Helene Motherby from Koenigsberg, writes in a letter from April 6th, 1910 to Luke’s posting in Sierra Leone and has some excellent news regarding her research of the Zander family. The letter includes a manuscript family tree of the Zander family (Carl Lazarus von Zander etc.) / In a second letter from 23rd of October1911, Helene Motherby requested information from a Heraldic Office in St.Petersburg. The original answer was written in Russian and a translation into german is accompanying the original document in which Helene Motherby was informed that information regarding an aristocratic family can only be granted if the requestor can proof his/her aristocratic ancestry connected to the family in question. The request was in detail answered by pointing to the relevant Genealogical Offices in Livland / Estland / Gouvernement Kiew. / Helene Motherby apologizes for the ‘meager’ result and urges Sir Harry Luke to become a member of ‘The Society of Genealogists’ in London. She encloses the first quarterly report of ‘The Society of Genealogists of London’ which also lists the members (among them Fraulein Helene Motherby) and also includes two prefilled application forms for Sir Harry that would allow him to join the Society (Helene Motherby has signed both papers as a guarantor). /

Large Collection of original autographed and manuscript Material and Correspondence relating to the “de Zander / Zander Family”, which was intensely researched by Sir Harry Luke on his Genealogical Quest for Family Roots from both, his mothers side and his fathers side of the family. Luke determined, that his great-great-great-grandfather was Mayor Louis de Zander. The collection includes many original documents and also for example: Manuscript Letter Signed (MLS) and official documents from the Ministry of Religious Cults and Public Education in Warsaw (Poland) – transmitted through the Polish Consulate Jerusalem: The letter and documents are answers to Sir Harry Luke’s research into his family history and confirm that Luke’s ancestors were raised to nobility in the 18th century: Louis Zander, major in a regiment of militia, was raised to the nobility in 1790 in the Diet which had been convoked in Warsaw by the Confederation’ / The documents also mention Casimiro Zander and Samuel Zander and the Ennoblement of Louis de Zander.

Manuscript Letter from an unknown sender to Sir Harry Luke regarding St.Paul’s Cathedral in London: ‘Dear Sir, though I heartily approve the changing of the Jesus Chapel into an American Memorial Chapel I find the idea of putting the insignia of the 48 states of USA into the main window of St.Pauls Cathedral nauseating. Should it be necessary to teach to the Americans in the instance, at least let us be honest about it. I would suggest that the dollar sign would be more appropriate. If the insignia of Canada, Australia et. Memorandum for Sir Harry Luke relative to the property of R.T.Smallbones on the Island of Coludarz / Inquiry to his Majesty’s Secretary of State regarding the export of a trunk from R.T.Smallbone’s family. R.T.Smallbones writes here to his friend Harry Luke in Sao Paulo about a Trunk with some Heirlooms of his family which must have turned up in Austria after World War Two. Smallbones includes for Luke a copy of a letter which Smallbones had sent to the Secretary of State for Foreign AFfairs at the Foreign Office in London, explaining the History of the Heirlooms of his grandfather George Smallbones (″who was then employed by the Duke of Marlborough as a land agent”). Smallbones hopes that Harry Luke can help him bring the triunk back from Austria, where Luke holidayed regularly in Alt-Aussee.

Important typescript mentioning Cyprus, with manuscript annotations by Sir Harry Luke – the typescript is a copy of a letter which Sir Harry Luke wrote to his son Michael Luke on December 1st, 1963 from his residence in 96 Hellas Street, Kyrenia and Luke informs his son of Harrap (Publisher) urging him on to publish a revised edition of his Cyprus book. Luke writes: “The day before i left Harraps asked me if I would be willing to do a revised edition of my Cyprus book. I did not even know that the stock was down to its last few copies. I naturally said yes, and that is what i am working on now. It is involving, in fact, quite a bit of thought and work because I will have to trace the painful transition from British Crown Colony, which Cyprus was then, to Independent republic.” – Luke also reflects on the recent assassination of JFK: “The Dallas outrage is indeed a world tragedy. Not only is it the case that the world’s most valuable life of the moment has been taken; we have all lost something young, buoyant and infinitely engaging”.

Five letters to Sir Harry Luke by his doctor from Aldeburgh, Suffolk, and also included some smaller notes from other doctors he consulted during the years. The letters are lengthy, often personal due to the friendly relationship to his doctor. The gourmet and food loving writer, Sir Harry, receives already in 1952 the order: ‘In the interim you must go carefully with food and drink’. Included is also some ephemera like a photograph of a procession to church in Aldeburgh and some original prescriptions.

Letter from White-Hall, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where a chivalrous Sir Harry gave a regular allowance to Carola Peyton-Jones (who was the first wife of Sir Harry Luke’s son, Peter Luke). Sir Harry Luke writes here to her mother, explaining that he can not continue to send these payments because his employment in the Colonial Service comes to an end and he will only have his pension.
