Two Manuscript Sketch-Books [12” x 10”] bearing the Bookplate “Lady Gore Booth – Lissadell, Sligo [No.43]”. Both Folio-Size Sketch Books titled ‘The “Wood” Sketch Book’, both issued by ‘St. John’s Wood Art School’: 29, Elm Tree Road, London, NW 8. [Founded 1878]. Each Sketch-Book has 50 pages and most pages have manuscript sketches with a few loose sketches tipped in. The very accomplished drawings all appear to be in pencil and show landscapes, trees, horses, portraits, male and female figures, skulls. They all appear to be in the same hand. Also, tipped in is a b/w photo, 6” x 4” mounted on a card. It is signed in pencil by Roberts of Paris. Stamped on the back is “Roberts” 11, Rue du Havre. In pencil, it states “Elizabeth aged 11, May 1922”. From our research it is certain, that Colum Robert Gore-Booth (1913-1959) attended St.John’s Wood Art School and these appear to be his Sketch-Pads, the only other member of the Gore-Booth family who went to London in order to become an artist was Colum’s aunt, Constanze Markiewicz, who attended Slade School of Art at the turn of the century but the drawings do not fit her style.

Volume I: 118 pages (59 perforated sheets), with 87 studies, often with sketching on both sides of the sheets / Volume II: 100 pages (50 perforated sheets), with 46 studies inside the sketch-book plus two portrait-sketches loosely inserted, plus the photograph of one “Elizabeth”, dated May 1922 and signed by photographer “Roberts” 11, Rue du Havre, Paris. Publisher’s illustrated Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear.

Vita de Sancto Hieronymo [with original manuscript letter by Philip Hofer, later Curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts at Harvard’s Houghton Library, discussing his work at the [Pierpont] Morgan Library and the first product of Cygnet Press, “Vita de Sancto Hieronymo”, which he and George Parker Winship had produced 6 years earlier: “The little book which accompanies this note is one which George Parker Winship and I set by hand and printed a few years ago. It amused us, and, I hope, will amuse you. Of course we would do it differently now – that is always the way !”. The letter, on Hofer’s stationery with his address at 14 East Ninetieth Street, is addressed to one Dr. Collija in Stockholm, on June 25, 1934 and Hofer reminisces about the wonderful time he had there and how he wants to return to Sweden.

Wichtige Frankfurter Schule-Sammlung von sehr bedeutenden Arbeitsexemplaren / Widmungsexemplaren / Autorenexemplaren, Autographen und Manuskript-Notiz-Zetteln des deutschen Philosophen Karl-Heinz Haag. Die Arbeitsexemplare (Sieben Buchtitel in neun (9) Bänden) und handschriftlichen Notizen und Autographen (Postkarten), stammen aus der privaten Bibliothek des Adorno und Horkheimer- Schülers, Karl-Heinz Haag. Die in der Sammlung enthaltenen Manuskript-Notizen und Autographen (Postkarten von Horkheimer) sind inhaltsreich und teilweise auch deshalb sehr bedeutend, weil es unter Insidern bekannt ist, dass Haag auch während seiner aktiven Zeit innerhalb der Frankfurter Schule notorisch wenig veröffentlicht und schriftlich kommentiert hat. Beiliegt ausserdem ein Zeitungsausschnitt zur Adorno-Lehrstuhl-Nachfolge. / Important, stunning collection of seven, signed or/and annotated association-copies (working-copies) from the private library of german philosopher Karl-Heinz Haag. Haag was pupil, friend and colleague of Adorno and Horkheimer and was one of the members of the Frankfurt School of Social Theory and Social Research. The collection of annotated books (Seven Booktitles in nine (9) volumes) also includes ephemera (Autograph postcards, newspaper-clipping, as well as several manuscript – pages of significant notes and thoughts by Karl-Heinz Haag regarding topics discussed in some of these publications). The collection is especially important because Haag published and commented notoriously little during and after his tenure in Frankfurt.
