This extremely rare publication is a key-publication of Irish Genealogy and has set new standards of genealogical research. In the Obituary for Rosemary ffolliott, the Irish Times wrote in 2009: “In 1958, when she was 23 years of age, Rosemary ffolliott compiled “The Pooles of Mayfield”, a history of Settler Families in the Cork area. The publication of this Munster gentry, which some who appeared in it described as “the Dead Sea Scrolls”, initiated a career in the difficult field of Irish genealogy, made the more arduous by the destruction of records at the Four Courts. Her dedication to a discipline that had been considered vague, imprecise and colourful, had an acknowledged effect in raising the standards of genealogy in Ireland. Her research methods were meticulous and she is remembered as a genius in the use of the Registry of Deeds in Henrietta Street. In 1966 she became a Fellow of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, the first woman to be recognised in this way.” The publication is an important source for the History of Family-Connections for the two Irish Country-House-Libraries we currently have on offer: “The Richard Meade Collection (Ballymartle)” and “The Danile Conner – Collection (Connerville and Manch House)”. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Hinge slightly shaky. From the library of Frederic Zelnik / Friedrich Zelnik. Inscribed to Frederic Zelnik by one of his silent cinema actresses, Emma Morel, during the filing of “Vadertje Langbeen”, based on a Novel from Jean Webster and adapted fror the screen by Rudolph Bernauer, the film was made by Zelnik and filmed in Amsterdam. Emma Mourel was one of the stars of the Movie and inscribed the book to Zelnik: “Van ouren voorbeeldigen Regisseur den Heer Friedrich Zelnik, her herinnering van Amsterdam Augustus 1938. Voor alle….Gross-aufnahmen !! Met reeht-hartelycken dank en auf Wiedersehen von Emma Morel”.

Illustrated cover with an Edo-period hunting-scene in ukiyo-e style. The booklet itself illustrated with polychrome woodblock-illustrations in colour, showing 51 animal species. Illustrated softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear and some fraying to the outer borders. One corner with paper-loss. A very, very rare publication, dated in ink by its previous owner “Brighton, 1881”.

No.8 / 200 copies, of the original limited edition. Dublin, The Cuala Press, 1944 [September 1944]. Octavo. 58 pages. Original Hardcover. Inscribed by George Yeats on the front free endpaper: “Mrs. Hempel from George Yeats, April 1944”. This has to be of course “April 1945”. The impossibility of signing/inscribing a book in April 1944 if it was only published in September 1944 is easily explained with the classic everyday-mistake of still writing the previous year in the first few months of the following year. A stunning association. The signature and inscription is a solid match to George Yeats’ autographs in her later hand and William Butler Yeats and George Yeats were frequent visitors to the Hempel’s in Dublin. In addition, the low number of the edition (8/200) suggests this being one of the reference copies given to George Yeats, who contributed heavily to the volume and even added an explanatory note (in print) verso the titlepage. This copy is near fine, bound in the publisher’s quarter buckram over yellow, paper-covered boards. The books pages remained unopened. Eva Hempel’s husband Eduard Hempel is one of the most controversial figures in modern Irish history, excoriated by some as ‘Hitler’s man’, defended by others such as the country’s first President, Eamon De Valera. Certainly, Hempel presented William Butler Yeats in 1938 with a copy of ‘Germany Speaks’ whose inscription described an ‘unforgettable afternoon’ spent together by Yeats and Hempel. Eduard Hempel and his wife were accepted socialites in the Dublin world of World War II, famously receiving a condolence call by de Valera upon the death of Hitler. Eduard Hempel and his wife Eva were granted asylum in Ireland after world war II and stayed way beyond the end of World War II.

Original Hardcover / Contemporary half-leather with gilt lttering and ornament to spine. Volume I professionally rebacked and all three Volumes now firm and strong. Very good condition of this important mid-19th-century-publication, documenting the very essence of intertwining politics and History of Ireland and Victorian Britain. The work is difficult top find in excellent condition. Interior excellent besides a few very minor dogears to some pages. From the library of B.Burrowes, Belfast, with the armorial bookplate / Exlibris including the Motto: “Audaces Fortuna Juvat”.
