Duodecimo (9,8 cm x 14,5 cm). 317 unnumbered pages (collated complete). 18th century Hardcover (full leather with gilted spinelabel ‘Overbury’). The binding professionally repaired. 18th century endpaper with handwritten notes in ink. Manuscript exlibris ‘Paul Exner ex libris 939’. Several contemporary ownership signatures within the book (for example Henry Grier, 12th of Apryll 1687). Titlepage professionally repaired. Wonderful example of this rare book.

First and Forurth Edition. Two Volumes (complete set). London, J.R.Tonson and S.Draper and H.Linto / C.Hitch at the Red Lyon and J. Hodges at the Looking-Glass, 1754. Small-Octavo (10,5 cm x 16,5 cm). Volume I [First Edition, printed by Tonson]: [11], 402, [3] pages with two title-pages/ Volume II: [Fourth Edition, printed by C. Hitch and J.Hodges], Frontispiece, LXXII, 356 pages with two full-page copper-engravings by van Gucht (plus engraved Frontispiece). Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. With the name “John Morrison” on the titlepage of both Volumes [possibly the 18th century – Architect John Morrison from Midleton, with a connection to Castlemartyr]. These books came subsequently from, the Library of Daniel Conner, Connerville / Bandon / Manch House in which also a set of Buffon, from the library of Richard Boyle Bernard, Dean of Leighlin and MP for Bandon Bridge was included.

Die gesamte Ausgabe in wunderbarer Erhaltung mit nur ganz geringen Anzeichen von vereinzelten Stockfleckchen. Stempelchen auf Titelblatt. Kleines, ganz dezentes Namensetikett des Vorbesitzers auf dem hinteren Vorsatzblatt.

Hardcover / Original, 18th century full-leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. Binding very firm and only slightly bumped and rubbed. Overall in a very good condition with some signs of external wear. With the name “John Morrison” on the titlepage [possibly the 18th century – Architect John Morrison from Midleton, with a connection to Castlemartyr]. Volume I: Portrait-Frontispiece of Lady Montagu by Sir Godfrey Kneller, V,309, [1] pages with 11 illustrations/folded facsimiles (including frontispiece) / Volume II: XI, 339 pages / Volume III: 288 pages / Volume IV: 326 pages / Volume V: 292 pages plus 36 unnumbered pages of an Index. Hardcover / Original, very decorative full leather-bindings of the early 19th century with original spine-labels and gilt lettering on spine. Besides some minor rubbing and some minor discoloration to the spines from white paint, the complete set is in firm and overall very good condition with only minor signs of wear. 6. [Herrick, Robert] / John Nott [Bristol] / Barron Field.

Working copy with annotations and inscription by Editor John Nott and also being an “Association Copy” between John Nott and Barron Field of: “Select Poems from the Hesperides, or Works both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq. with occasional remarks by J.N. [in our copy, Nott has completed his pseudonym himself and reveals the “Nott”, followed by “M.D”]. – Accompanied also with the Head, Autographe and Seal of the Poet [this Frontispiece is missing in our copy].

Bristol, Printed and Published by J.M.Gutch, no year [1810]. Octavo. IV, 253 pages, followed by an interleaved section at the end of the book, being the original, printed Review by Barron Field from “The Quarterly Review” in 1810 in which Barron Field reviews Nott’s publication of Herrick’s Hesperides, which Nott has inscribed Hardcover / Modern half-leather in style of early 19th-century bindings. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed: “Barron Field – from the editor, Dr. Nott of Bristol – Hotwell [Waters]”. This being the original copy which Dr.John Nott sent to Barron Field for Review. With additional annotations and explanations on page 5, where Nott elaborates on 17th century poet Alexander Brome being the inspiration for the idea of Poem VII “No Loathsomeness in Love” and then Nott wrote down part of the poem by Brome in ink: “I vow I am so far from loving none….” (9 lines). Other annotation in ink (Nott) and pencil (possibly Barron Field) throughout the Volume.
