Binding of all eight Volumes look overall poor, with spinelabels missing or broken. Interior in excellent condition with some occasion faded dampstains but overall no browning and all the frontispieces in place. The Dublin Edition comes rarely to the market !

First Irish Edition. Dublin, Printed by P. Byrne (108) Grafton – Street, 1787. Octavo (11 cm x 17 cm). 286 pages. Hardcover / Original 18th century full leather with original spine-label. Binding with some stronger rubbing and minor loss to leather on spine. Still very firm and tight. Minor signs of a faded dampstain to a small part of the first 10 pages only. Otherwise very clean. From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown and his name in ink to the title-page.

Hardcover / Original full calf with original spine-labels and gilt lettering on spine. All three Volumes in protective Mylar. Some rubbing and bumping to binding and top of spines. Volume III repaired but intact and firm. Portrait of Charles Vth in Volume II cleanly detached. All three bindings very firm and tight. Frontispieces and Interior in excellent, bright condition. From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his name on titlepages of all three Volumes and Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown.

Hardcover / Original full leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. Binding still firm with the spine starting. Small stain to rear board. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear.

Volume I: VIII, 390 pages / Volume II: 387 pages plus 29 pages of an Index plus 4 pages of Advertising for 18th-century Irish printer and Bookseller, Sarah Cotter: “Books Publish’d by Sarah Cotter in Skinner-Row”. Hardcover / Original full leather with gilt lettering on spine. Name of preowner John Morrison on titlepages [possibly the 18th century – Architect John Morrison from Midleton, with a connection to Castlemartyr]. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. The very rare, even scarce irish edition of this important publication of the Scottish Aesthetic Movement: “In the popular book Elements of Criticism (1762) Home interrogated the notion of fixed or arbitrary rules of literary composition, and endeavoured to establish a new theory based on the principles of human nature. The late eighteenth-century tradition of sentimental writing was associated with his notion that “the genuine rules of criticism are all of them derived from the human heart.” Neil Rhodes has argued that Lord Kames played a significant role in the development of English as an academic discipline in the Scottish Universities” (Wikipedia).

Two Volumes in Three Parts (bound in Two Volumes). Dublin, Printed by Zachariah Jackson, 1793 – 1794 Quarto (23 cm wide x 28 cm high). Pagination: Volume I: Hand-coloured Frontispiece, VI [Subscribers], XIII, 894 pages [page 555 misprinted as 454] [Stating “The End” at the end of the Volume] with Four Maps and Three engravings (including Frontispiece) / Volume II: Hand-coloured Frontispiece, 792 pages [Stating “End Of The Second Volume” at the end of Volume II] with Ten Maps and One Engraving (Frontispiece) / [Volume III] is Bound to the rear of Volume II and is falsely ending with “End of The Second Volume” even though it is the “Continuation of Book IV” and in all other listings of this book internationally is accepted to be Volume III. Pagination of [Volume III]: Hand-coloured Frontispiece, [No separate titlepage], 416 pages, XXXIII pages of an Index, 1 page “Directions to the Binder”, 10 pages “A Chronological Table of Remarkable Events, Discoveries and Inventions”, with Four Engravings (including Frontispiece). Hardcover / Modern Binding in the style of the 18th century. Full leather with gilt lettering on spine. Very minor signs of neglectable, minimal wormhole-damage. Obviously this work was robbed of many of the maps but those which remain have the original hand-colouring in stunning condition (see description). Overall near Fine condiiton of this extremely rare set, with only minor signs of wear. Page 199/200 of Volume II with longer cut (Text not effected). All the engravings and maps without defects.
