Ink on Paper. Britain, c. 1850. 18.4 cm wide x 11.3 cm high. Mounted on paper (partially detached). Mounted on paper with an additional manuscript map of East Tartary. These maps were drawn in a 19th-century hand and used to be part of a Sammelband of Maps in the Public Library of South Shields.

Pagination: Printed Text-Volume: XLVI, 148 pages / Manuscript – Section: 72, (1) numbered pages with text in ink and drawings throughout (some in colour), followed by 76 empty pages. Original half-leather with gilt lettering and dating on spine and front board. Binding rough and pastedowns detaching. No titlepage due to the printed part being the printed course handed out at the R.M.A. Name of G.W.Johnson signed in pencil on Introduction-page of the Text-Volume and on titlepage of the manusscript-section.

With the often missing large fold-out Military Map of Zulu Land and Adjacent Parts of Natal and Transvaal. Hardcover [publisher’s original green cloth] with gilt lettering on spine. Design on front board. First layer, with frontispiece, slightly detached. Otherwise in very good+ condition with only minor signs of external wear. Interior bright and clean, with very minor spotting near front. Ink markings to first page of first chapter. Bookplate / Exlibris of Davenport House (Bridgnorth) to front pastedown with the printed motto “Audentes Fortuna Junat”. Extremely rare, rather scarce and even scarcer with the large folding-map included !

The illustrations include: 5 coloured chromolithographic plates one of these is a folded, double-page size), 11 woodcuts, large folded map “Route through Mexico, Guatemala & San Salvador” (this 19th century map also shows Upper California, New Mexico and Texas as well as New Orleans with Red River and the Missouri River). Hardcover / Beautifully rebacked, modern dark green morocco with gilt ornaments to spine and boards. Excellent, firm condition with only minor signs of external wear. Only very minor signs of foxing to some of the plates as usual. The text clean. Von Tempsky’s explorations and descriptions of the journey from San Francisco to Mazatlan to Durango to Mexico City to Puebla to Tehuantepec to Guatemala to Santa Catarina to San Salvador with cultural descriptions of the locals and their customs are of great value.

Original, beautifully illustrated Hardcover Leporello / Accordion / Concertina – tourist publication with blindstamped emblemata “Eureka” to the rear board. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear for the later edition. The Leporellos both in unusually, excellent condition. No fraying to the folds of the Leporellos. Binding of the 1889 edition is poorer, The Leporello and the booklet of this version are completely detached. A few tears and damages between the folds. Both interior of booklets are very clean. Overall very good condition and all illustrations are superfresh! Extremely scarce.
