Very good condition with some minor signs of wear only. “Presentation Copy of “The Two Duchesses” with Autograph / Manuscript – Letter by Vere Foster to his niece, Emily Albinia “Alba” Foster. With a stunning, unpublished, two-page manuscript letter, revealing several important details about the immediately favorable reviews and reception of the book “Two Duchesses” [″in the Daily Telegraph”] and Vere Foster’s disdain about some criticism from one J.Donohue [which led to an alteration in the second edition of the book]. Vere Foster is also expecting a review to appear in the “Athenaeum” but reports: “the Athenaeum has nothing yet”. Vere Foster apologizes to his niece for the delay in sending the book and explains that he had left 12 “parcels” with Blackie’s agent and gave instructions to send them, but a few days later found they had been “untouched”. One of the most important finds of Vere Foster – Material in recent years with no sign of similar material on offer in the past years on the international market.

[Fox, Charles James] / [Arthur O’Connor] / Trotter, John Bernard [Late Private Secretary to Mr.Fox] Memoirs of the Latter Years of the Honourable Charles James Fox [with a lengthy report on a meeting with Irish Revolutionary Arthur O’Connor in Calais]. Third Edition. London, Printed for Richard Phillips, 1811. Includes a longer section in which John Bernard Trotter discusses a chance meeting of Fox with irish Revolutionary, Arthur O’Conno, in a section called the “Independent conduct towards Mr.O’Connor [Arthur O’Connor, brother of Roger O’Connor]: “An incident occured at Calais, which as it excited much remark, and roused a good deal of censure at the time, I shall advert to more length than would otherwise be necessary. It happened that Mr.Arthur O’Connor had arrived at the inn at which we stopped very shortly before. He waited on Mr.Fox, was received by him with that urbanity and openness which distinguished him, and was invited to dinner by him, which invitation he accepted of. It is is well known that, after a long confinement at Fort George, he, and some other Irish gentlemen, agreed with the Irish Government to expatriatethemselves for life. Mr.O’Connor was now on his way to Paris accordingly; when chance brought him to Quillac’s Inn, at the same time with Mr.Fox. His manners were extremely pleasing….” Trotter continues at length to elaborate on the meeting and conduct of Arthur O’Connor, their subsequent visit to the Theatre and three other times of meeting in Calais.

[No.158 of only 200 Signed copies of the rare, Limited Edition]. Kiel, Nieswand Verlag, 1990. Large Folio (48 cm x 34.5 cm). 17 full-page-photographs on heavy archival paper. With a hidden chapter in the rear: “Bob Willoughby’s favourite Tunes”. Original Hardcover (spine comprises of a brass tube). Excellent condition with minor signs of exceptional condition. The publication was very successful and experienced a second, revised edition which was not signed. This first, limited edition, signed by the groundbreaking jazz-photographer Bob Willoughby, is exceedingly scarce and should not be mistaken for the “normal” edition, which looks the same but is not signed and limited.

Three Volumes bound in Two (complete set). [Paris], 1726. Small-Octavo (10 cm x 16 cm). 200, 200, 224 pages. Hardcover / Original 18th century leather with gilt lettering on spine. New Spine-Label applied to Volume I. Both Volumes housed in a bespoke built Solander Box. Some minor rubbing. Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).

Titlepage of Volume four missing, otherwise complete and the interior in excellent condition. A very rare find, this is one of the more elusive periodicals of the early 19th century, printed just after the Act of Union in 1800 was established and printed by english printer Luke Hansard for publishers and printers in London, Dublin and Cork.

(Illustrated Edition with full-page portrait of Goldsmith, 45 (of 46) full-page hand-coloured Plates of Butterflies, Birds, Rhonocerous etc. as well as two hand-coloured, additional Titlepages with animal-scenes [plate XXVI (Crocodile) is missing and plates XXXI and XXXVIII were never inteded to be bound with the work]).

Original Hardcover with the fragile, original, transparent dustjacket (the lettered flaps have been attached to the pastedowns with two small strips of sellotape). The transparent dustjacket in poor condition but the volume itself in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Three very small dogears. Name of preowner on endpaper. The first edition of this publication is one of the rarest publications of irish poetry / literature. Scarce ! From the library of irish Historian Tadhg Ó Murchú, with his name on the endpaper.

Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Very Rare original edition in its original binding !

10. Holland, Father – Reverend W.

History of West Cork and the Diocese of Ross [With stunning Ephemera: 1. Original Advertising-Leaflet as well as 2. An original Letter from the Southern Star, informing the recipient: “…the History by Fr. Holland was all sold out long ago and no copies are to be had…Skibbereen, 3/3/59”].

Skibbereen, Southern Star, 1949. 8°. 427, VII pages. With numerous illustrations. Hardcover / Original cloth with lettering on spine and cover. The binding as usual, slightly shaky but in unusually excellent condition. No splitting of Spine (which is often the case with this book). Interior excellent. Name of preowner on front and rear pastedown. Now an extremely rare book, it is hard to find this publication at auction, in bookshops or anyone who lets it go from any private collection. The loosely inserted original Letter by the Southern Star in the year 1959 confirms how rare the book already was after its publication. The presence of the letter and the original advertising pamphlet (2 pages), make this ultimately the rarest copy of the book we ever handled.
