Spike Lee’s Gotta Have it : Inside Guerilla Filmmaking [Inscribed and signed by Spike Lee to british producer Davis Puttnam (then Columbia CEO / Chairman of Columbia Pictures) who was instrumental in green-lighting Spike Lee’s ‘first major studio film’ (see Patrick Goldstein’s article in the LA Times in Feb.,1988) “School Daze”. The inscription reads: “To David Puttnam / Thanks for Everything / I appreciate it / Fuck Columbia !!! / love, Spike Lee” and is reflective of Spike Lee’s and David Puttnam’s experiences at Columbia (according to the Patrick Goldstein – article, Lee later complained that he constantly faught with Columbia, accusing them of trrying to ‘ghettoize’ his film.
