Collation: Volume I: Frontispiece, XLVI, XLVI, 634 pages with 10 plates and 3 maps / Volume II: Frontispiece, XXXII, XXXII, 668 pages with 8 maps / Volume III: Frontispiece, VI, 694 pages with 5 maps / Volume IV: Frontispiece, VII, 464 pages plus 76 unnumbered pages of a General Index and 1 plate and 1 map. Hardcover / Original 18th-century leather with gilt lettering and labels on spine. Interior of this set with all maps and illustrations in excellent, very clean condition. The boards of the bindings with abrasions and some bumping but overall very firm. Some stronger peeling of the leather on board of Volume I, Only three pages with minor tears. The large map of Northern Africa (Palestine, Egypt and Libya) with a minor tear. The stunning maps and plates in timeless beauty. Highly underestimated work, in the shadow of Gibbon but with meticulous detail in presenting the geographical impact of the Roman Conquest. Mixed Edition: Volume I: 24th Edition (1754) / Volume II , Volume III, Volume IV and Volume V in Seventh Edition (1717-1718) / Volume VI is missing (!) / Volume VII and Volum VIII (1718) / Supplement-Volume IX is titled: “A Continuation of Letters – Written by a Turkish Spy….continued from the Year 1687 too the Year 1693. Written originally in Arabick, Translated into Italian, and from thence into English.

Eight Volumes (of 9, inluding Supplement). Dublin / London, G.and A. Ewing / W.Taylor, 1717-1754. Small Octavo. Volume I: Frontispiece showing Mahmut the Turkish Spy, XXV, 312 pages / Volume II: 276 pages / Volume III: 287 pages / Volume IV: 287 pages / Volume V: 276 pages / Volume VI (missing) / Volume VII: 248 pages / Volume VIII: 280 pages / Volume IX: Frontispiece “Mohamet the Turkish Spy”, VIII, (6), 304 pages. Hardcover / Original full leather of the 18th century with gilt lettering and ornament to spine and boards. Only the first Volume (Dublin Edition) with some stronger damage to endpapers but very good and firm inside. All other Volumes in very good condition. Extremely rare with Volume IX, the nearly always missing Supplement Volume. Provanance: Volume I (Dublin Edition) from the library of John Morrison / Volumes 2 – 9 from the library of Chris Rogers. Both names written in contemporary ink to titlepages.

Five Volumes (complete set). London, Printed by Luke Hansard & Sons, near Lincoln’s-Inn Fields for T.Cadell and W. Davies, in the Strand, 1808 – 1818. Quarto (22.3 cm wide x 27.7 cm high). Pagination: Volume I: VII, 590 pages / Volume II: VIII, 551 pages / Volume III: VIII, 572 pages / Volume IV: XII, 647 pages plus Errata / Volume V: XI, 565, [3] pages. Hardcover / Original, full 19th century leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine and boards. All boards firm and sturdy attached with only Volume III and IV with minor traces of splitting to upper spine but firmly holding. Volume IV with minor loss to upper spine. Overall better than very good condition with some signs of external wear in form of lesions to the leather. All Volumes in expertly applied, protective Mylar. The interior of this set in stunning condition. Very unusual and rare set, the only complete Quarto-Version on the international market. From the library of Daniel Conner (Connerville / Manch House), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown. [Important: This set also comes with the important 1835-edition of “The History of Greece” – From the Earliest Period to the Death of Agesilaus. By William Mitford but continued to the Death of Alexander the Great by R.A.Davenport.
