Written Originally in Low-Dutch by William Sewel, and by himself Translated into English. Now Revis’d and Publish’d, with some Amendments.

First English-language edition, following the low Dutch edition of 1717. London, Printed and Sold by Assigns of J.Sowle, at the Bible in George-Yard, Lomabrd -street, 1722. Folio (21 cm x 31 cm). [12], 723, [19] pages (including a thorough Index), plus 4 unnumbered pages of a catalogue of “Books Printed and Sold by the Assigns of J. Sowles”. Hardcover / Original, late 18th century leather with original spine-label and ornament to boards. Six raised bands; spine starting but still firm and holding. Overall very good condition. Bookplate / Exlibris of Arthur Hofmann to pastedown. Excellent and interesting provenance this being one of the most important publications on Quaker – History and originating from one of the oldest and most influential Quaker – Families in England and Wales.

Modern Hardcover / 20th century half leather with spinelabel. New endpapers. Excellent condition with only minor signs of browing, some occasional, mild foxing. Together with the Ingenio that makes the Sugar, with the Plots of the several Houses, Rooms, and other places, that are used in the whole process of Sugar-making; viz. the Grinding-house, Still-house, and Furnaces; All cut in Copper.

London, Printed, and are to be sold by Peter Parker, at his Shop at the Leg and Star over against the Royal Exchange, and Thomas Guy at the corner Shop of Little Lumbard-street and Cornhill, 1673. Small-Folio (19 cm x 29 cm). [II], 122 pages plus an unnumbered Index-page (bound, according to instructions for the bookbinder after page 84), lacking the Fold-out-Map of Barbados but including all six illustrations of Plants, as well as the three diagrams of Houses and Production-Rooms for Sugar. 19th-century Hardcover (half-leather with gilt lettering on spine). Condition of Binding: Very good condition with only minor signs of wear to the binding / Condition of bookblock: Original, front free endpaper was preserved and bound in. Rear endpaper missing. The original endpaper includes two historical ownership-signatures in ink (c.17th or early 18th century) as well as several annotations in ink and pencil. The previous owners seem to have been one Richard Gardner and there is an additional notation verso which reads: “E[x] Libris Richmondi Garnays [or Garneys]”. Some ink-annotations or corrections throughout the book. Signs of old bookworm – damage and very few abrasions due to fire-sparks (few pages effected only). Some plates with professional repairs, some tears. Some professional paper-repairs and re-enforcements to title-page and Content-Page. All the described flaws sound worse than they really appear. All plant-plates in strong impresion. A scarce publication ! From the library of Rev. William Andrew Lamb, Kilcoleman Park, County Cork.

Hardcover / Traumhafte Halbmaroquinausgabe des 20.Jahrhunderts mit verziertem Rueckenschildchen und neuen Vorsatzblättern die an das Papier des 19.Jahrhunderts angepasst wurden. Von grosser Seltenheit ! Die Erfindung des Stethoskop’s hier das erste Mal in deutscher Ausgabe mit allen Falttafeln. Aussergewöhnlich gut erhaltene Ausgabe. Auch die reizvollen Falttafeln erstklassig erhalten. Der sehr saubere Buchblock nur mit einigen Stockfleckchen zu Beginn des Bandes. Das rot getönte Maroquin wunderbar im Einklang mit dem original geröteten Schnitt. William Stokes begründete seine berühmte Abhandlung “An Introduction to the Use of the Stethoscope; With its Application to the Diagnosis in Diseases of the Thoracic Vicera; Including the Pathology of These Various Affections” auf die Arbeit von Laennec.

Pagination of the two Volume-Set: “The Constant Lover / Account of the Literary Life of Kotzebue”: Volume I: XIV, 203 pages / Volume II: 216 pages / Pagination for the accompanying Volume: “Pizarro”: 102 pages. Hardcover / Stunning, recent half leather and marbled-paper-covered-boards with gilt lettering and ornament to spine, bound to style of the 18th/19th century. All three Volumes housed in a bespoke built Solander Box (see plenty of images on our website). Excellent condition. From the library of Susannah Townsend-Meade (Ballymartle), with her name to titlepage. The accompanying Volume bears the name of one Mary Johnston. The “Constant Lover”, with the “Account of Kotzebue’s Life” is a very scarce publication !

The Energies of Men. [Personal copy of William James’ wife Alice Howe Gibbens – signed: “A.H.James”]. Stunning provenance of the First Edition-offprint from ‘The Philosophical Review’, Vol. XVI, No. 1, January, 1907, of William James’ Presidential Address to the American Philosophical Association on December 28th, 1906. A study of psychic energy ranging from Pierre Janet to Yoga to the “mind-cure” movement. James already is fascinated in this address about G.Papini’s “Doctrine of Action”, “the study of all human powers and means”.

1907. Octavo. 19 pages. Original Wrappers / Softcover. The wrappers detached and brittle. The pages stapled and in very good condition. James retired in January 1907 from Harvard. Possibly one of the rarest offprints with a William James-connection and with high probability, a gift from James to his wife. Books with the provenance of his wife never seem to surface on the market.

Historia naturalis dentium humanorum – Natuurlyke historie der tanden van den mensch [First Bilingual, Latin-Dutch Edition of John Hunter’s “A natural History of the Human Teeth”].

Dordrecht, Blussé, 1773. Quarto (19 cm x 26.5 cm). XXII, 213, (1) pages with 16 fantastic, full-page engravings on the human teeth, jaw and even depicting Tooth-Anatomy, showing details of the interior nerves of teeth, tooth sockets etc. Original 18th-century edition bound in a beautiful, early 20th – century, private binding with new endpapers and decorative spine-label. In collector’s Mylar. The text and plates throughout with faded dampstain ! Otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. This very rare volume on the History of Dentistry is very rare and still very much in collectable condition. This used to be the copy of the Association of German Dentist “Reichsverband Deutscher Dentisten” and the book has one large stamp to the pastedown and a small stamp to the lower margin of the dutch titlepage. One more decent stamp to outer margin of page 31.

Original, 18th century italian manuscript on how to build a vertical clock with sound: “Come si Dissegni in practica un Orologio Verticale Italiano a suonodella Campana secondo le regole del Scanavacca” [Translates: “How to Draw an Italian Vertical Clock with the sound of the Bell in practice according to the rules of [Bartologmeo] Scanavacca”].

Italy, c.1750. A4. 22 pages with text, diagrams or drawings (partly in colour). Original Softcover Folder with original manuscript papers and drawings inside. Majority of the pages with damages and some with loss of text to outer margins. Extremely rare and interesting manuscript, also dealing with “Orologi a Sole Guili”.

239. Hickin, Norman / [Naylor, Verney].

Original, Irish Butterfly – Specimen – Collection of entomologist and naturalist, Norman Hickin. 70 boxes with Butterfly – Specimen from the irish countryside in Dromreagh (Durrus, West Cork, Ireland), Ballycommane, Glengarriff, and wider surroundings. Many boxes labelled. The collection was established in the outgoing 1970s and early 1980s and gives an excellent view into the specimens still common at that time in Ireland and its unspoiled, non-industrial countryside. Norman Hickin subsequently published a Field Guide on Butterflies in Ireland (1992), clearly based on the specimens collected here.

Original, very decorative cloth with gilt lettering and ornament to front and rear boards. New spine furnished in the 19th century. Corners bumped, pastedown a little rough but interior excellent with all engravings and especially the maps in very good condition. Extremely rare publication !
