All Volumes in strong, protective collector’s Mylar, which invites the reader/collector to use the work without fear of handling. Armorial Bookplates / ExLibris of Daniel Callaghan, Esquire of Lotabeg (MP for Cork City 1830-1849) to all five pastedowns (Motto: “Fidus et Audax”). Marbled endpapers a little dusty but beautiful. Volume 1, 2 and 5 with some weakening to the spine (slightly cracked), but holding and still firm overall. All plates present. As known and always found with this scarce edition, the original, titled tissue-guards all in place, have created stronger signs of foxing to the plates but in sharp contrast the text in all the five Volumes in bright and clean condition with only occasional faint staining. Endpapers with some minor browning. Very good+ condition overall with some rubbing and minor bumping to the Volumes but really only minor signs of external wear. Extremely sought after publication, not to be confused with the later, much more common Octavo Editions !

The Montague – connection is meaningful. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed: “Barron Field – from the editor, Dr. Nott of Bristol – Hotwell [Waters]”. This being the original copy which Dr.John Nott sent to Barron Field for Review. With additional annotations and explanations on page 5, where Nott elaborates on 17th century poet Alexander Brome being the inspiration for the idea of Poem VII “No Loathsomeness in Love” and then Nott wrote down part of the poem by Brome in ink: “I vow I am so far from loving none….” (9 lines). Other annotation in ink (Nott) and pencil (possibly Barron Field) throughout the Volume.

Wonderful, inscribed and signed Association-copy of Alfred Kazin’s “Starting out in the Thirties” with an inscription to Kazin’s friend, Gilbert Seldes and a signed cheque by Gilbert Seldes, which Seldes addressed to Kazin in 1967 for the amount of 2 USD for a Lunch and Kazin then angrily manipulated into Inflation-Money of 2 Million Dollars and sent back to Kazin with the book, provokingly asking: “O.K. Can I cash it now ? You ! ….. Apologize !…….

Signed and inscribed by Kazin on the endpaper: “To dear Gilbert from Alfred Kazin – NY 1967 (+ Lunch for the Twenties)” / Alfred Kazin also mentions pages “108-109 Draper” on the endpaper and leads Sledes to a part of the book in which he speaks about Harriet bringing him to the house of Muriel Draper”. The signed and manipulated cheque, loosely inserted. A wonderful and rare association.
