Illustrator Adolph Birkenruth was born in 1861 in Grahamstown, South Africa. His father was a Prussian diamond broker, the mother came from Frankfurt, which is where the family moved back in the 1860s. There Birkenruth attended the University and further studied in Paris. In the 1880s he moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In addition, he used to work as an illustrator for several magazines, including the ‘Black & White’ weekly or the London News. Birkenruth died in 1940. (Source: askart)
