″Cork Harbour has long been famed for its safe anchorages and aesthetic beauty and the River Lee has been a favourite subject of artists since the 18th century. This exhibition, organised by The Port of Cork Company in association with the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, drew together all the historical strands to tell the story of the harbour from the seventeenth century to the present day. The exhibition included paintings, engravings and maps, as well as documentary material and artefacts. Landscape paintings are increasingly cited as documents in the history of art. The admission of a geographical area as a ‘document’ can be more problematic, although there are many such areas – the Lake District, the Hudson River or the forests of Barbizon, which have served as focal points of artistic discourse over the centuries. As well as documenting the history of Cork Harbour, this exhibition prompted discussion and reflection on the future development of the harbour in terms of industry, recreation and the preservation of the natural environment.” (Cork City Council exhibition description)
