Charles Norris-Newman accompanied Lord Chelmsford’s expeditionary force into Zululand as a special correspondent 1879. He was the only English correspondent in Natal and provided the British public with the first account of the bloody aftermath of the famous Battle of Isandlwana (Isandhlwana) that left 1,300 British troops and between 1,000-2,500 Zulu Impi warriors dead.
The defeat caused the British to temporarily withdraw, before launching a heavily reinforced – and successful – invasion of King Cetshwayo kaMpande’s Zulu Kingdom. Norris-Newman, the London Standard’s Special Correpsondent travelled with Chelmsford’s staff throughout both campaigns.
Though he succeeded in his prosecution of the war, Lord Chelmsford’s reputation never fully recovered from Isandlwana. Nevertheless, Newman-Norris dedicated the book “with the highest feelings of respect and admiration” to Chelmsford.
The book gives a detailed account of the British operations of the war, and gives particular – and poignant – attention to the aftermath of Isandlwana.

Includes an Appendix with an “Official Report of the Defence of Rorke’s Drift” and a “List of Officers and Men Killed in Action at the Camp Isanwhlana Hill, Zululand, on the 22nd January, 1879”.
