Original hand-coloured engraving. Venezia, Antonio Zatta E Figli, 1784. Plate Size: 31 cm x 40 cm. Sheet Size: 39 cm x 50.7 cm. Original map. Very good condition, with the slight traces of staining to lower section of map.
Hand-coloured border with latitudinal and longitudinal lines along margins. Coloured interior map borders. Very interesting and decorative map of Egypt from the Mediterranean Sea down to the Nubian Desert, including ‘Arabia Petrea’ and the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf (Mare Rosso and Golfo Arabico). The Nile flows the length of the map from Aswan near the lower end of the map. Mountains and hills depicted pictorially and with hachures. The pyramids near Cairo are shown as triangles.
Decorative title cartouche in top right corner shows a vignette oasis.
From Zatta’s monumental Altante Novissimo, one of the last great decorative atlases of the 18th Century.
Antonio Zatta (1722-1804) was an Italian cartographer and publisher who was based in Venice. One of his major contributions include the Atlante Novissimo, a four-volume atlas of the world.
