An account of the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over two and a half centuries, and the resulting civil war and reign of terror by the samurai. The streets of the capital, Kyoto, was transformed into ‘a sea of blood’ and a band of expert swordsmen was formed – the Shinsengumi (‘Newly Selected Corps) – to counter the enemies of the Shogun. With unrestrained brutality the Shinsengumi became the shogun’s most dreaded security force.
