Illustrated with eight exquisite small woodcuts by Hans Alexander Mueller (Hans Mueller).
A German/American woodcut and linocut artist, Hans Alexander Mueller (also spelt Muller), studied printmaking techniques at the Academy of Graphic Arts, Leipzig. At the end of the First World War (1918) he returned to teach engraving and woodcut.
He moved to America in 1935 and in the years following was commissioned to create many fine woodcuts, wood engravings and linocuts. He illustrated classic novels such as Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Kidnapped, Cervantes’ Don Quixote and several works by Joseph Conrad.
He was also a well-respected arts educator and in 1939 his book , ‘Woodcuts and Wood Engravings: How I Make Them’, was published in New York. Hans Alexander Mueller was the teacher and mentor of Lynd Ward (1905-1985), one of America’s greatest masters of the wood engraving.
