Freund, Philip / [Jørgen Claudi]
Prince Hamlet.
New York, Bookman Associates, 1953. 14.5 cm x 21.6 cm. 70 pages. Book designed by Richard Miller. Garamond type. Art work by Floriano Vecchi. Original Hardcover with dustjacket in protective collector’s Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Very minor foxing and discoloration to endpapers and edging. Highlighter markings to top edges. From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen-Translator Erik Haugaard. With his bookplate / Exlibris to front pastedown (Exlibris design by Brian Lalor). Includes a letter as ephemera (dated 1956) to Mrs Erik Haugaard from Mr. Jorgen Claudi, Assistant Head of the Drama Department of Statsradiofonien. Following Mrs Haugaard forwarding Freund’s play to the department, Mr Claudi, in a damning fashion, declines to broadcast Philip Freund’s Prince Hamlet: “….If a great Danish author had adapted a classic in an inspired, modern form, it could be reasonable to try such eksperiment [sic]. But as the author is a rather unknown American, it is not to be expected that the Danish Radio should broadcast it……”
’ Here is a new play: boldly original and yet paraphrastic, quite provocatively so….this young author changes it cleverly, making it simpler, giving a fresh shape to some of the characters, a significant twist to the plot…’ (From jacket notes)
Philip Freund (1909-2008) was a novelist, poet, documentary film writer, and playwright as well as essayist, literary critic, and anthropologist. (Google Books)
