Ireland’s hidden heritage of earthen houses is one of the country’s best kept architectural secrets. Hugh MacConville’s atmospheric photographs show how thatched clay houses, built from local materials and following local traditions, do not intrude the landscape, seeming to rise from the earth from which they came. Peigin Doyle describes the farmstead at Mayglass, built in the early 1700s, a superb example of the traditional architecture of south Wexford. Ireland’s Earthen Houses is both a celebration of what remains of our traditional houses and a plea to preserve and cherish them. (From cover notes)
