This book is the fifth in a series examining Turner’s watercolours and drawings from successive decades of his life. With a long-established reputation, by 1830 Turner was the most sought-after watercolourist of his day. As well as continuing to work on projects already in hand, such as the engraved topographical series ‘Picturesque Views in England and Wales’, in the 1830s Turner embarked on important new commissions to illustrate the poetry of Rogers, Milton and Scott. However the decade is especially noted for Turner’s extensive travels abroad, which are chartered here in a variety of sketches and finished designs: rich bodycolour studies of views on the River Seine engraved for ‘The Rivers of France’; dramatic colour sketches of Venice in mixed media on brown paper made around 1833-5; and expansive watercolours of the Alps relating to a trip to Switzerland in 1836. Also included is a representative group of the colour studies, or ‘colour beginnings’, which were an essential feature of Turner’s working practice in the 1830s. (From cover notes)
Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (1775-1851), known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. (Wikipedia)
