Wannan, Riverboat Stories of Old Australia.

Wannan, Bill.

Bill Wannan Selects Riverboat Stories of Old Australia.

First Edition. Melbourne, Sun Books, 1978. 13.5 x 21 cm. 148 pages. Original illustrated softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear.

Includes for example: Various tales of the Riverine by William Astley who used the pen name ‘Prince Warung’, The Darling River by Henry Lawson and Paddle-Wheels Away by Will Lawson etc.

When the Governor of South Australia, Sir Henry Young, launched the first steamboat on the Murray River, he prophesied that steamers would ‘never leave these waters.’ This was the beginning of an exhilarating era and from it were men like ‘Hookey’ Freeman, George Bain Johnston (The Murray River Spaniel’), ‘Captain Gus Pierce’ and ‘Bam Bootis’. Although the heyday of Australian riverboats was over by the 1920s, a rich folklore grew out of life along the great rivers. In this anthology Bill Wannan presents his choice of Australia’s best riverboat stories.
