The story of how Padre Lira Parente made it possible for tens of thousands of neglected people in rural North-East Brazil to remain on the land they owned. With the help of organizations such as Oxfam he built roads and schools in order to enable the people to become independent. The people were taught skills so that they could earn money to buy food in times of local famine caused by the cyclic droughts of the area. The book is based on the Padre’s letters and eye witness accounts.
’I have read the book with great interest and considerable admiration.’ Graham Greene.
