‘The Ninth Wave’ is a novel complete in itself but at the same time it is a sequel to Ehrenburg’s war novel, ‘The Storm’, whose principal characters it shows facing up to the problems of the post-war world. Their experience and behaviour during the war years, as told in ‘The Storm’, do much to determine their reactions to the cold war, which form the main subject of ‘The Ninthe Wave’.
The connection of the two novels is reflected in the title, the explanation of which is to be found in the words of one of the characters (Professor Dumas), who says: ‘The outraged conscience of humanity reminds one of a huge wave, such as history has perhaps never witnessed … according, to a popular Russian belief, the ninth wave is the largest of all …’.
