Patrick Denn was a hedge-schoolmaster in Cappooquin. He was parish clerk and wrote many religious verses in his native Gaelic, although he also used English. He died in Capoquin in 1928. He had his poems printed in Cork and Clonmel. His published works include ‘Comhairleach an Pheacuig agus Aitheanta De Minighthe’, ‘The Catholic Children’s Religious Primer’ and ‘Machtnuig go maith air’, translated into the English prose work ‘Think Well on’t of Dr. Challoner.
Denn confined himself to a choice of pious subject matter and as poetry his work is not without merit. He could turn a good phrase, while his language was always simple, direct and melodious.
