Donald Ward was born in Belmont, Surrey, in 1909 and educated at St George’s School, Ramsgate. In the Second World War he was a conscientious objector and worked during the Blitz as a postman by day and a member of the heavy rescue brigade by night. Summer Night was published to coincide with his ninetieth birthday. He died in 2003.
