″In an attempt to instill in our young members an understanding of a bygone era whenn there was no electricity, no motor cars and gravel roads we came up with this idea to compile a book on the lives of the ‘over eighty year olds’ in our area. We discussed it with the members and they were quite enthusiastic. Through the local Parish newsletter we asked people born pre-1928 to contact us and very soon we had a surprisingly long list.
The members gave out forms to all of these elderly people and asked them to fill them in, with the help of their families, and the feedback was very positive. There were wonderful stories of hard times from their childhood continuing on to the wonderful improvements they experienced with the introduction of electricity, and all the labour-saving devices that came with it… For our younger generation who were born with all these luxuries we thought it would be very sad if this generation passed away with all their stories and folklore lost. These older people have seen so much change in their lifetime that it is essential that it is recorded for future generations…” (Introduction)
