During his many travels Kayser visited Israel in 1961; “The Saints of Qumran” is the fruit of the stirring impressions he received there. This short novel resumes the thread that leads us back to the legend of “The Death of Moses”, written more than forty years earlier. Both are outstanding examples of Kayser’s forceful and beautiful poetic language and his deeply religious feeling.
Both novellas are included in the present selection of his works, along with a short story, “Here Am I!”, and a poem, “David Plays before Saul”. Literary essays discuss Lessing, Bettina von Arnim, Thomas Mann’s charming treatment of Joseph’s niece in “Joseph the Provider”, Kafka, Wassermann, and Heimann, with an In Memorian Albert Einstein. Five essays on religion and philosophy form the third part of the volume, documenting Kayser’s manifold interest and giving a sampling of their vast range and the span of his profound knowledge.
