Johnson, David.

The Interwar Economy in Ireland.

Dundalk, Dundalgan Press, 1989. 21.6cm x 13.9cm. 50 pages. Original illustrated softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. [Studies in Irish Economic and Social History, 4].

The last years of the Union were a period of great prosperity for Ireland. After 1920-21 therefore, Irish governments, north and south of the Border, had high hopes for the further development of their respective economies. These were largely dashed. The pamphlet attempts to explain why this was so. What were the economic effects of partition? How was Ireland affected by trends within the international economy? Did governmental policies help or hinder development? How far, despite the underlying difficulties, was there social progress in both parts of the island? The tet is followed by an annotated bibliography which contains works by contemporaries as well as comments on more recent research.
