This Thomas Mann classic tells the story of a young man growing up in Germany prior to the first World War who is cared for by first his Grandfather and then Uncle after his parents die. On visiting a cousin in a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps he contracts tuberculosis and stays for seven years. World War One breaks out just as he is to leave the sanatorium and he enlists in the army to fight in a war it is alluded he will not return from.
