This book, through the letters between the authors, gives us further insight as to the reasons for the United States change of opinion from seeing Russia as an ally to opponent after World War Two, the development of the policy of containment (of Russia and communism) and what later became the Cold War.
Kennan, at the time of the letters, was at the American Embassy in Moscow and is considered the architect of America’s containment policy having sent the Long Telegram in 1946 that ultimately became the draft for foreign policy dealing with the Soviets for the next forty years.
