Kipling’s son, John, had, through his father’s connections, gained a commision into the Irish Guard despite having been initially ruled out of military service. He died during the fighting in the early days of World War One. When approached by the battalion to document their war history Kipling immediately set to work on this memento of his son’s and the battalion’s service. Kipling is reputed to have said of this work, “This will be my great work…It is done with agony and bloody sweat”.
