″The first edition of this Dictionary being exhausted, it has become necessary to publish a second. This has been revised and corrected in many instances by the Compiler himself, who continued to labour upon the work till his death in 1876; since which time it has been carried on by a member of his family. A short Memoir of the Author has been appended, about 150 lives added, and the Dictionary carried down to the date of the present year [1878] Any corrections of errors in this work will be thankfully received, and the help already given by friends is here gratefully acknowdledged.”
