Willa Cather was an American author who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, in works such as O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and The Song of the Lark. Through the 1910s and 1920s, Cather was firmly established as a major American writer. By the 1930s, however, critics began to dismiss her as a “romantic, nostalgic writer who could not cope with the present.″During the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, her work was seen as lacking social relevance.
