Glazebrook, Philip.
The Eye of the Beholder.
First American Edition. New York, Atheneum, 1976. 22cm x 14cm. 254 pages. Original hardcover with dustjacket in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear.
Narrated in the first person by Ned, a minor foreign service official stationed in Rome, as the novel open, he is visited by a strange girl, Amy, sent by his cousin George, who shortly thereafter appears on the scene himself. The contrasting and clashing temperaments of the two cousins give the novel its impetus; the retiring Ned and the forceful George, who runs the family estates according to his own unpredictable lights. They are closely linked by their past (their boyhood together at that estate, Saradon, when George was mysteriously responsible for his twin brother’s death) and by their present (their odd relationship with the odd girl, Amy).
