Clarke from O.W.L. – Christmas 1929”. Donn Byrne was owner of Coolmain Castle (near Kilbrittain) until his death in a car accident in 1929.

The first day cover is illustrated with a quote from Heaney’s “Bogland”: “We have no prairies – To slice a big sun at evening – Everywhere the eye concedes to – Encroaching horizon…”

An extraordinary spoof, long undetected as Mary Carbery’s invention and proven by a mention in an advertisement of her works in another of her books (The Farm by Lough Gur).
