Provenance: Exlibris: A Debidour (Élie Louis Marie Marc Antonin Debidour) / Premiere edition dans le commerce après la rare édition originale publiée entre 25 et 40 exemplaires en décembre 1823 par l’Imprimerie royale pour les amis de l’auteur. Ce court récit fut rapidement écrit en 1820 lors d’une retraite de convalescence. Sollicitée par Chateaubriand, ami de la Duchesse de Duras depuis 1809, qui avait parti- culièrement aprécier le texte, l’auteur se décida à publier l’ouvrage anonymement. L’histoire de cette jeune sénégalaise, éduquée en France se rendant compte à l’âge de 12 ans des préjudices liés à sa couleur de peau, est considérée comme le premier roman de la littérature française à aborder les problèmes de racisme. / First published edition, following a private printing of 25 copies. A very good+ copy in contemporary paper-covered boards. An anonymously published novel by a French woman who was a close friend of Chateaubriand and who established a well-known salon in London. Her work has been compared to that of Richardson and Rousseau for obvious reasons, but she is perhaps more relevantly understood in the context of the early 19th-century French women’s writing that has only rather recently become a subject of study. Based on the true story of a Sengalese servan, unaware of her race until she overhears talk of it among the French family for whom she works, and thus begins her life as a black woman. In large part the tale recounts her hopeless love for a white man and her eventual retreat to a convent. This is the first European novel featuring a black female protagonist, and according to John Fowles who at least in part based his own The French Lieutenant’s Woman on the work, the first attempt by a European to enter the mind of a black character. An attractive copy of this cultural landmark.

Beautiful, recent Hardcover / Modern half-leather with gilt lettering on spine and marbled, paper-covered boards. New endpapers. Bookblock and interior in very good and firm condition. Faded dampstain to some of the text only. Very rare and important renaissance-publication.

Original, Irish Butterfly – Specimen – Collection of entomologist and naturalist, Norman Hickin. 70 boxes with Butterfly – Specimen from the irish countryside in Dromreagh (Durrus, West Cork, Ireland), Ballycommane, Glengarriff, and wider surroundings. Many boxes labelled. The collection was established in the outgoing 1970s and early 1980s and gives an excellent view into the specimens still common at that time in Ireland and its unspoiled, non-industrial countryside. Norman Hickin subsequently published a Field Guide on Butterflies in Ireland (1992), clearly based on the specimens collected here.

7597. [Cardiac catheterization / Nobel Price Lecture] – Forssmann, Dr. Werner.

Collection of important offprints, publications and correspondence (signed letters etc.) by Nobel Laureate Werner Forssmann, many of which are inscribed and signed by Forssmann to his colleague, irish cardiologist and clinical scientist, Eoin O’Brien. The collection includes: 1. A signed / inscribed version of Forssmann’s first offprint-edition of his Nobel-Lecture: “Die Rolle der Herzkatheterung und Angiocardiographie in der Entwicklung der Modernen Medizin” (pages 177 – 181, Stockholm, 1957, SIGNED and beautifully inscribed to O’Brien in July 1976) / 2. A signed, original Offprint: “The Evolution of Modern Cardiology” (11 pages, SIGNED Offprint from “Perspectives in Biology and Medicine – Vol.12, No.1, Autumn 1968) / 3. A Signed / Inscribed Offprint: “Die Sondierung des Rechten Herzens”, 1957-Reprint of the original 1929 – publication, (4 pages with portrait of Forssmann, published in “Therapeutische Berichte”, 29, 5, 1957) / 4. A Signed, original Offprint: “Euthanasie” (with minor tear), (7 pages, SIGNED, Offprint from Deutsche Apotheker-Zeitung Heft 31, Seiten 1127-1133, 1975) / 5. First english edition of Werner Forssmann – “Experiments on Myself – Memoirs of a Surgeon in Germany”, together with two TLS (Typed Letters Signed) by Translator Hilary Davies to Eoin O’Brien, who Peer-reviewed the book. Hilary Davies also included a press-release for the book and gave Eoin O’Brien access to Forssmann by alerting him to Forssmann’s address in Germany. Included are Eoin O’Brien’s typescripts of his correspondence with Forssmann.

Germany, 1956 – 1976. Octavo. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Signed and inscribed items by Forssmann are of great rarity. The Nobel Lecture alone is very scarce and very rarely available signed.

With a fantastic, full-page, signed message written inside the book by George Moore. Very good – condition of the binding with signs of external wear (some spotting). Moore responds in his manuscript note on the halftitle possibly to the request of Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H.Lawrence, who requested a copy of Moore’s book “The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe”. Moore sent her instead this edition.
