Richly illustrated biography of Sir Joseph Robinson, 1st Baronet (1840-1929). Robinson, known as ‘The Buccaneer,’ was a “Randlord”, one of the South African mining magnates who controlled the highly profitable gold and diamond mining industries in Southern Africa around the turn of the 20th Century. They played a major part in shaping the economic and political development of the region at a time when the newly discovered mineral wealth heightened tensions between the British colonies and the determinedly independent Boer states. These tensions over the future direction of political and economic developments eventually resulted in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) and the subsequent British imperial expansion throughout southern Africa. Robinson was a leading figure throughout the era and the book describes the outstanding events such as the discovery of diamonds at Kimberley and gold in the Transvaal, the Jameson Raid and political figures such as Cecil Rhodes and Paul Kruger.
