A history of Southern Africa and the tense relationship between the Boers and the British for control of the region written by Norris-Newman, a war correspondent and author. Details the events surrounding the First Anglo-Boer War, a war fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881 between the United Kingdom and Boers of the Transvaal (as the South African Republic was known while under British administration). The war resulted in Britain’s accession to the establishment of the Second Republic led by a triumvirate consisting of Vice President Paul Kruger, Commandant-General Piet Joubert and MW Pretorius. The names of the Boers’ victories at Laing’s Nek and Majuba became enshrined in emboldened Boer nationalism and the war would help set in train the circumstances that led to the larger Second Boer War in 1899.
