Two vastly differing paths which began respectively in New York State, America, and Cork, Ireland, converged in the west Cork village of Ballydehob in 1973 and led to the collaboration which culminated in this book. In response to her encounter with the Irish landscape and the themes of Irish History, Myrna Haugaard, an American woman of Jewish background, wrote a sequence of beautiful and tautly crafted sonnets meditating on themes of imagination, love, womanhood, birth and death.

Brian Lalor has illustrated each sonnet in line drawings which echo and compliment the poet’s concerns and, an impressive array of styles, present their own vision of the immediate and universal themes of the poems. This collaboration of two dedicated artists in different media has wrought an inspired alchemy of place and memory and imagination, of the Irish and Jewish traditions, of passion and courage-and humour.
